Kenny Florian retired this week. It's always sad to see someone forced to retire, especially when you're a big fan. I've made no secret of the fact that Florian was always one of my favorites, and I always rooted for him to win the big one. It really is unfortunate that he never won a title, but I hope he's at peace with his career. He had a good run in the UFC and he accomplished a lot. I always appreciated how Kenny tried to finish fights, and you could tell he was passionate about his craft. I'm sure he'll find a home in the UFC announcing booth. Kenny got out at the right time, as you just can't take a chance with your body; he's got to worry about the rest of his life now.

At E3 the other day it was announced that Electronic Arts now has the video game license for UFC games. Dana White was there and seemed pretty pleased. I think the previous developers, THQ, did a good job but they are having money issues and it's likely that the UFC license had to go. I would assume that EA will do a good job with the license, but I'll have to play the game for myself to be sure.
It's a good day for the UFC, at least on this front. I don't know all the particulars, and I don't care. What I do care about is being able to play a good UFC video game. As long as EA produces a good game, I'll play it. It's just like with the Bellator video game coming out on Xbox Live Arcade and Playstation Network this summer. It's described as "arcade-style" which doesn't fill me with hope, but I'll give it a shot before deciding. It might end up being really fun to play, though I wonder about the depth.

UFC 148 has a new main event in Rich Franklin vs. Wanderlei Silva. I've always liked both guys, but this is not a worthy pay-per-view main event. Franklin is stepping in for the injured Vitor Belfort. Silva vs. Belfort only worked as the previous main event because the card is taking place in Brazil. It was still a weak main event, but at least it made a little sense.
A few weeks ago we had a roundtable at the Torch to discuss what the UFC could do to help their television ratings. I said that the originally planned fight between Franklin and Cung Le should be on free TV because no one would buy a PPV for that fight. Franklin vs. Silva definitely falls into that same category as well. I actually think the fight will be pretty entertaining, but it is not a PPV main event. The fact that the fight should be fun and exciting is exactly why it should be co-main eventing a free TV card for the UFC. It doesn't work as a PPV main event, but it would be fantastic in headling, or co-headlining, a free card.
