Hockey Fight of the Day: Nevin Markwart vs. George McPhee

Today’s bout may be fifteen years old but it hasn’t lost an ounce of awesomeness over the period! The hatred between Boston and New York is well-documented, spilling over into sports-related rivalries with regularity. This time around the involved parties are the Boston Bruins’ Nevin Markwart vs. the New York Rangers’ George McPhee. From the [...]

Amazon Cloud Player review: functional, not mind blowing, and still US-only

Amazon Android Cloud Player appIt's hard to believe: our world-spanning network, our Internet, which is the cornerstone of free speech and free society -- which, on a good day, is capable of causing populist revolutions -- is still crippled by banal geolocation restrictions. We are, of course, talking about Amazon's two latest offerings, both of which are only available in the United States. Last week it was the excellent Android Appstore for Android, and today it's the Amazon Cloud Player for Web and Android.

Along with Cloud Player, Amazon also launched Cloud Drive, which is basically just like any other cloud storage digital locker. It's not particularly feature rich, and there's no real reason to use it over something like SugarSync or SkyDrive -- it does work outside the US, however.

Its primary purpose, as far as we're concerned, is that it stores your your Cloud Player music in a subdirectory. You get 5GB of Cloud Drive storage for free, and then it's $1 per gigabyte per year if you need more space.

The Amazon Cloud Player itself will not, to put it bluntly, blow your mind. It works, but it's very much an early, and possibly rushed, release. Let's dive in to the Web and Android players for a closer look.

IK Multimedia's iRing MIC Cast is now shipping for iOS devices, we go hands-on

Back at CES, IK Multimedia unveiled a trio of music / recording accessories for iDevices. One of which was the diminutive iRig MIC Cast to handle those on-the-go podcasting and voice recording duties. The outfit has announced that the ultra-compact microphone that plays nice with the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch is now shipping. Let's have a quick refresher, shall we? The kit plugs into your Apple device's 3.5mm audio jack and sports a headphone output of its own for monitoring purposes. Inside the kit, a unidirectional condenser capsule goes to work to isolate the audio you want recorded instead that pesky background chatter. If you're looking to snag one, it'll set you back $40 (€29.99) and includes a stand for your handheld inside the box. But before you take the leap, head on past the break for some of our hands-on impressions of the device.

Video Roundup: Fedor Appears in Mercedes Benz Commercial, Big Nog Cuts a Rug on “DwtS”

(Fedor, seen here seconds before appearing in the most famous MMA sex tape of all time: "Two Scoops, One Emperor")  Just a few weeks out from what could be his last fight as a mixed martial artist (Author's note: I just held back vomit whilst typing that.), Russian demigod Fedor Emelianenko recently popped up in a Mercedes-Benz commercial, if only for a few seconds of ultra slo-mo glory. For some reason, the creative talent in charge of said commercial thought it would be cooler for Fedor to don a tuxedo rather than his Glorious Sweater of Absolute Victory, which is as big a travesty as anything we've ever seen in the five years we've been in existence. Not since Overeem/Dos Santos has such an opportunity been squandered, so shame on you, Mercedes-Benz. Looks like our company car is going to be a Ferrari next year. Check out the ad and let us know whether or not you will be boycotting Mercedes-Benz for this glaring oversight along with us. They had us until they tried to pass off diving as a sport. Like we all don't know it's just falling with style. Just ask Jason Statham.

Gargantuan SQL injection infects 3.8 million URLs, installs rogue antivirus

LizaMoon SQL injection rogue AV
Over the last few days, a mass SQL injection attack has been quickly gathering speed. Just three days ago only 28,000 URLs were affected, but at the time of writing, there could be up to 3.8 million infected URLs.

Websense
has a complete write up the attack, dubbed 'LizaMoon,' but here's the basic gist: it looks like someone is exploiting a vulnerabilty (or vulnerabilities) in hundreds of thousands of websites running on Microsoft SQL Server 2003 and 2005. It's not yet known whether this is a vulnerability in SQL Server, or simply a case of outdated, unmaintained, and easily-exploitable CMSes.

The attack takes the form of an SQL injection, which then inserts a link to a JavaScript file hosted on the attacker's server. This is repeated over and over until every Web page in the SQL database has been infected -- and considering 3.8 million URLs have been infected, you can see that this is a very easy, and automated, attack.

Fortunately, the JavaScript isn't particularly malicious: it pops up a rogue AV program called Windows Stability Center, but that's it. Better yet, the rogue antivirus is already recognized by a bunch of real antivirus suites, including Avast, Panda and Microsoft Security Essentials.

The real problem with SQL injection attacks is that there's nothing we surfers can do about them. There will always be old and unmaintained websites, and thus SQL injections will remain one of the easiest and most lucrative tools of hackers and spammers alike. All you can do is keep your antivirus and anti-malware software up to date, and pray.

Google bids $900 million for Nortel's patents to protect against litigation trolls

Nortel, once one of the biggest telecoms company in the world but now in the death throes of bankruptcy, has selected Google's $900 million bid for its patent portfolio as the stalking horse bid. This doesn't mean that Google will automatically win Nortel's massive array of telecoms patents, but it does mean that Google is the preferred buyer.

Google, which has a history of lobbying for patent law reform, has been the target of many patent litigation suits. Google's relative infancy means that it has a lot less patents in the vault than big-hitters like Microsoft, Oracle and IBM, and buying Nortel's portfolio of 6,000 patents could provide better protection against patent litigation in the future. It's worth noting that both Apple and RIM have showed interested in the portfolio, too.

Mashable speculates that the patents -- which are nearly all telecoms-related -- will be used to defend against Oracle's attacks on Android's use of Java. We reckon that Google is simply looking to cover its future endeavors in the world of networking. In the absence of patent law reform, and continued threats to net neutrality, owning a bunch of telecoms patents sounds like a very sensible move.

Google Play Store now selling Galaxy Nexus accessories - if you're in the U.S.

Google Play Galaxy Nexus Accessories

Good news, everyone! The elusive Samsung Galaxy Nexus accessories are now available directly from Google in the Google Play Store. (Where they should be!) Yeah, it's only been about six months or so since the phone was released, but we're not going to look this gift horse in the mouth.

Available are the Vehicle Dock -- that's the proper one with the pogo pins to keep you charged and not the janky "navigation" dock that only holds the phone -- and a pair of desktop docks. If a traditional landscape dock is your bag, it's there, with the same pogo pins for charging. Or if you need some high-def output, there's an HDMI dock in portrait orientation that uses the USB port for output and charging.

The vehicle and landscape desktop dock each cost $54, and the HDMI portrait desktop dock is $49. You can snag 'em all at the link below.

If you read my review of the GoPro HD Hero2, you’ll have noted that I thought it strange that a company who touts their cameras as being capable of being used 60m underwater would produce a housing that wasn’t optimal for this purpose.  The domed lens on their standard waterproof housing results in blurred video [...]

Chad Griggs injured, Phil Davis now welcomes UFC newcomer Wagner Prado at UFC on Fox 4

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

DavisPhil_GG180_3.jpg
An injury has forced Chad Griggs out of a planned light heavyweight bout with Phil Davis at UFC on Fox 4, and stepping into his place will be UFC newcomer Wagner Prado.

The news of the injury and replacement was first reported by MMAWeekly.com, who confirmed verbal agreements were in place for the new matchup.

Prado, a product of Team Nogueira in Brazil, makes his debut on the strength of seven straight wins to kick off his young career. The 6'4" light heavyweight has stopped all but one of his opponents, going to the third round just twice in those seven fights.

Davis hopes to bounce back from a loss to Rashad Evans in January at UFC on Fox 2. The five round decision loss brought a halt to his undefeated streak, ending his run at nine wins.

UFC on Fox 4 takes place from the Staples Center in Los Angeles, Calif., headlined by a middleweight bout between Hector Lombard and Brian Stann.

Penick's Analysis: This is a better fight for Davis and for this card, if only for the fact that there was no point at all to the Griggs matchup. Prado, as an undefeated prospect, has an opportunity to make a big statement in his UFC debut. Davis, meanwhile, can get back on track by handing the Brazilian his first ever defeat. It's a good fight, and we'll see just where Prado stands in the 205 lb. division.
