For the first 15 minutes of the fight, Guida danced and hopped around the cage, as Maynard tried to figure out the distance and range to land strikes of his own. Ultimately, he got so frustrated that he threw up his middle finger at Guida and cursed him out in the cage.
It continued into the fourth round, until Maynard literally dropped his hands and let Guida hit him in the jaw three times. He took it, stuffed a takedown attempt, and then tried for a guillotine choke, which was ultimately unsuccessful. In the fifth, Guida's dancing continued, though Maynard closed the distance again and did some damage in the clinch.
When the fight came to a close, Maynard took a split decision, taking three rounds on the scorecards of two judges. He tried to keep it respectful in his post-fight interview, but expressed his frustrations. Guida then said something to him, and the two exchanged heated words before going to the back.
Maynard picked up his first victory since defeating Kenny Florian in August of 2010, while Guida lost his second straight fight, and more importantly drew criticisms from all sides.
