Toyota pulls Cydia theme and ads to appease Apple

In news that will no doubt shake the very bedrock of your belief system, Apple has asked Toyota to remove its Scion theme and its advertising from ModMyi, a Cydia repository. The Scion theme has been available for weeks, but after it received a ton of press in the last couple of days, Apple finally lashed out.

It's not like we should be surprised, considering Apple has claimed in the past that jailbreaking is illegal -- but at the same time, did the Cupertino cronies hear about the ruling that made circumventing DRM, and thus jailbreaking, legal? Anyway, whether Toyota was supporting illegal, legal, or deliciously gray and ambiguous, activity, it doesn't matter: Apple asked Toyota to remove the theme, and Toyota graciously bent over and capitulated.

This story raises a much more interesting topic, though: this is the first time a multinational company has publicly acknowledged and embraced the jailbreak community. Considering jailbreaking is technically legal, and Cydia's creator, Jay Freeman, estimates that up to 9% of OS devices are jailbroken, it simply makes good, commercial sense to target jailbreakers with ads. Toyota was simply trying to make some money, for shame!

As long as Apple continues to throw around its increasingly-expansive mass, the legality of jailbreaking will continue to be inconsequential. It will be interesting to see if another big company dares embrace the jailbreak community after this, too.

Will Google launch IaaS cloud services at Google I/O 2012?

Sources at GigaOm state that Google will be releasing their own IaaS (infrastructure as a service) cloud solution next week at Google I/O. This move would extend their current cloud services, like app engine, cloud connect, and storage, and allow users to rent virtual servers from the folks in Mountain View, bringing them in close competition with cloud giant Amazon.

In this scenario, two things come right to the front of our minds -- ChromeOS and Google Docs (Drive). Both services could be great front-ends for a cloud infrastructure that's set up by the user, especially in the enterprise. Imagine a corporate portal that you connect to as soon as you fire up your Chromebook, and your own IT department manages it all. Then imagine you can also connect with your Android phone. This could be a really big deal™.

Of course, for now it's just a rumor and we're speculating on how it could be used. But we'll know in a scant five days or so, as Phil, Alex, and myself will be front and center at Google I/O basking in all the Googly news. This year's I/O looks to be huge!

AMD launches Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition, demands rematch with NVIDIA

If you've been missing out on the graphics card wars of late, then here's a quick rundown. AMD launched its high-end $549 Radeon HD 7970 at the end of last year, and it reigned comfortably for a few months until NVIDIA came out with the masterful GeForce GTX 680. That would have been the end of the matter, at least for this product cycle, except for one crucial factor: time. Having reached the market so much earlier, AMD has now had six months to not only tweak its drivers but also its 28nm silicon. That process has already culminated in 1GHz cards at the low- and mid-ranges, and today it leads to the (slightly predictable) announcement of a Radeon HD 7970 'GHz Edition' -- priced at $499 and expected to be available from a range of board makers from next week. ChromeLite: experience the ASCII Web of yesteryear

Have you ever wondered what the Web was like before the Mosaic Web browser? If you were born in the last 20-odd years, or you only discovered your inner geek recently, did you miss out on monochrome monitors and the dial-up BBS era? Well, here's your chance to get a sneak peek at history: grab the ChromeLite extension and marvel as the entire Web is transformed into ASCII characters.

Now, ChromeLite isn't really all that functional. For the most part, it simply strips images and converts text into a monospaced terminal font. There are a few Easter eggs inserted -- such as a fun message at the bottom of YouTube (image after the break) -- and some fun ASCII art, but that's about it. Rather oddly, most JavaScript continues to work -- so you can still enjoy Google Instant Search!

ChromeLite was actually made by Google as an April Fools' joke -- and indeed, an annoying 'you can uninstall this!' message appears at the top of every page -- but we're kind of hoping that Google, or another developer, takes ChromeLite and turns it into a real ASCII browsing extension with configurable settings. If anything, it will provide an easy way to save bandwidth and CPU time.

PENICK: On UFC 147's Struggles (With Main Card Fight Picks)

It's hard to find a lot of positives in Saturday night's card from Brazil, and the main reason for that is its status as a pay-per-view event. Were this a card offered live on FX or Fuel, the fact that so many of its competitors were mostly unknown Brazilian competitors making their UFC debuts wouldn't be an issue.

Indeed, even a ravaged card like this one - headlined by a rematch no one was publicly clamoring for between Rich Franklin and Wanderlei Silva - would be great for fans on FX. They'd be getting free fights, after all, and it's hard to go wrong with free fights. However, with this being a pay-per-view event, that's where the problems arise.

The simple fact is there's nothing on this card that drives fans to spend $55, not when you compare it to pay-per-view cards before and after it, and especially when you look at the level of fights compared to several recent free events. There have been better fights than Franklin-Silva II headlining on FX and Fox, and there have been better fights in support on free cards than Fabricio Werdum vs. Mike Russow or either of the "TUF: Brazil" Finals bouts featuring fighters very few in North America have ever seen.

Some of this isn't the UFC's fault. They had lofty ideas for this event, and the initial plan of putting Anderson Silva vs. Chael Sonnen II in a stadium absolutely would have erased any complaints about the undercard. That fight, had it gone through in a stadium, would have been huge, and well worth the pay-per-view dollars to see the spectacle.

Of course, noise ordinance issues in Sao Paulo and a U.N. conference in Rio de Janeiro forced the UFC to change things up, and in taking that fight from this card they took away it being a pay-per-view level event. When Vitor Belfort went down with an injury, that just compounded things.

Franklin-Silva II may very well be a fun fight; the rest of the night's main card may feature plenty of action and excitement for whatever MMA fans tune in. However, asking fans to pay for this level of card is not a winning proposition, and the UFC will be faced with their worst buyrate in years because of that.

Their hands may have been tied. They had it set as a pay-per-view event with Silva-Sonnen II planned, and with three events already on FX it's not something they could just move to the network. Additionally, they already had to cancel one pay-per-view this year with March's planned trip to Montreal. Really, this is one of the rare times when they've had ambitions bigger than what they could pull off, as they didn't anticipate having the issues they did. That leaves them with the weakest pay-per-view card in a really long time, and it's probably going to be a money loser for them.

With that out of the way, In lieu of a full-on preview for the card - and I can admit I have little, if any, legitimate analysis to give on any of the Ultimate Fighter contestants from the Brazil season - I've got some quick thoughts on the main card matchups for Saturday night, as well as some quick predictions below:

Rich Franklin vs. Wanderlei Silva (190 lb. catchweight): Franklin won the first meeting between the two back at UFC 99 in Germany, winning a decision in a three round fight. This time around, he's coming off a 16-month layoff after his decision loss to Forrest Griffin. Silva has won two of his last three, but he's got a 27 second knockout loss to Chris Leben sandwiched in between them. Franklin's chin is still better than Silva's, and this time around they've got five rounds to work with. Silva will try to rush the action early, but I'm fairly confident Franklin can still get the job done, and this time around he finishes it. Franklin by KO in the third round

Fabricio Werdum vs. Mike Russow (Heavyweight): Russow's a good wrestler with some big power in his punches, and he's lost just once in his entire MMA career. However, he's been picked apart in fights, and has never faced an opponent on Werdum's level. Werdum is the better grappler by far, and though Russow's got several submission wins his submission game isn't near Werdum's level. The fight just needs to hit the ground and Russow will be in Werdum's wheelhouse, but as we saw in the Roy Nelson fight Werdum can pour on some punishment as well. Either way, this is Werdum's for the taking. Werdum by submission in the second round

Yuri Alcantara vs. Hacran Dias (Featherweight): Alcantara has won 13 straight, and has just 3 losses in his career. Dias enters the UFC off eight straight wins, with just one decision loss in his career. Both fighters are exciting prospects in the featherweight division and want to prove themselves amongst the elite at 145 lbs. Alcantara has shown his skills twice in the UFC, Dias will try to show off for the first time himself. Both are adept at the submission game, and their ground skills are likely to cancel each other out. We should have a fun fight on our hands in this one, and I'll go with Dias by decision

Cezar Ferreira vs. Sergio Moraes (TUF Brazil Middleweight Final): Moraes is in this final as an injury replacement for the man that knocked him out in the semis, Daniel Sarafian. Ferreira ended his semifinal bout with a head kick knock out. Without knowing much more than that, I'm going with Ferreira by KO in the second round

Godofredo Pepey vs. Rony Mariano Bezerra (TUF Brazil Featherweight Final): As I admitted previously, I know very little of the competitors in this TUF Brazil season. With that said, my coin flip pick goes to Pepey via submission in the second round

Interlocked is a three-dimensional brain teaser

Back when I was a kid, I used to love crafting ornate puzzle boxes out of Lego. There would be just one way to open the box, by carefully shifting and rotating a bunch of pieces. Well, either that, or breaking the box in frustration.

Interlocked takes that spirit and turns it into a beautiful Flash game. It's a good thing the soundtrack is soothing, because the game itself can get pretty frustrating.

At the start of each level, you're presented with a box built out of blocks in different colors. You can click and drag the mouse to rotate the box any which way. Once you decide you want to shift a part of the box, hit SPACE to switch into "move" mode. You can then click any part of the box and drag it. Of course, you can only move a part as long as nothing is in its way. So it becomes a matter of understanding how the box is built, and what parts you need to move around so you could eventually take the box apart.

It's a tricky, difficult game, but it's a great brain teaser -- and definitely a keeper.

Cagereaders rant about Jason Miller’s retirement, Brock Lesnar’s UFC 146 appearance and more

It's Reader Rants, when Cagereaders' opinions get center stage. They had plenty to talk about this week. Jason "Mayhem" Miller moving on from MMA, Antonio Silva's bloody face, Brock Lesnar's rumored return and Wanderlei Silva's comments about Vitor Belfort's broken hand all had tons of discussion on the Cagewriter Facebook page. Jason "Mayhem" Miller was dismissed from the UFC, and then he decided to retire. You all had very different views on him.

He's probably not worth the money he commanded. He's a recognizable face to put in against up-and-comers, but for a longtime veteran, that's probably not exactly what Dana White and co. are looking for. I've never had a problem with his walkouts and craziness, though. He's a showman. Put a camera on him in any situation and he likely to act crazy. -- John Wilcox

I think Dana has always had it in for him... Cut him after going the distance with GSP, when GSP was something special and finished fighters. His Bisping performance was terrible, sure but for Dana to call it the most lopsided fight ever is a joke. His performance against C.B. "lay and pray" Dollaway looked better on his feet than I've seen him in a while but blew out his knee. White has given other fighters much more of a chance than he gave Miller. I hope he's not done as I for one would love to see one last Miller-Kennedy fight. -- Will Howard

Cagereaders were moved by the large amount of blood in the Silva bout.

That doc should've stopped that fight. The ref should've stopped that fight. Dana and the fans got blood hungry in this match, and that kinda thing is what is keeping the UFC from becoming a more accepted sanctioned sport. -- Tobyus Sanchezo

Brock Lesnar's appearance at UFC 146 got tongues wagging, and as usual, the big guy inspired strong opinions.

He isn't an MMA fighter. He is a big dude who can push around smaller dudes. His skill level should be showcased to idiots who love fake wrestling. He don't deserve a UFC paycheck. -- Philip Erwin

Yeah, but make him earn marquee fights. Maybe put him as an early fight on Fox against someone like Nelson or Struve. -- Aaron Roy

I was surprised to hear this. I don't see him doing well. His intimidating aura is gone, and everyone knows if he gets punched in the mouth he's done. His size and speed can help him win against some guys, but I don't see him competing for the title again. -- Josh Farris

Wanderlei Silva ripped Vitor Belfort for breaking his hand and pulling out of UFC 147, which surprised Cagereaders.

Be upset if your opponent doesn't make weight, not breaks his hand in practice. Wandy must have been struck in the head too many times. -- David Feinblatt

This was a big fight in front of his countrymen. This was also his first fight in Brazil in 12 years, and I'm sure he wanted a big return. -- Sohrob Kohistani

Flipboard for Android now available to the masses!

After running a short beta and having Samsung Galaxy S III exclusivity, the developers of Flipboard have gone ahead and opened the doors to the masses. The beta testing phase allowed for testing on numerous devices so you'll now be able to download Flipboard for Android not only from the Google Play Store but the Amazon App Store, Nook Store and right from within Samsung Apps.

We've given the "Magazine-style" reader a run through already but the official release does bring some new additions such as 14 localized editions—for Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Korea, Netherlands, Spain, Taiwan, U.S. and U.K. Plus, it also now includes the freshly announced Google+ integration as well as YouTube integration allowing you to view any of your subscribed videos right within the app.

If you're looking for the download, the Google Play Store is the best bet right now as some of the options are still populating.

Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira's doctor explains why he dropped out of UFC 149

When Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira accepted a fight with Cheick Kongo for UFC 149 next month, he had received initial clearance from his doctors to return to full training after suffering a broken arm against Frank Mir in December.

However, he was forced out of the bout with Kongo over the weekend when difficulties in training made it clear the arm wasn't fully ready to go. In an interview with Fighter's Only, his physiotherapist Angela Cortes commented on the reasoning behind him stepping out of the bout.

"The objectives that were set to reach the prime of the preparation in the period of training had been obtained," she said. "But during the intense sessions of sparring Rodrigo related discomfort followed by pain in the arm that went under surgery, caused by takedowns and impact from punches on the region where the screws are placed."

Penick's Analysis: It's unfortunate that he took the fight without knowing fully whether he'd be ready or not, but he was cleared by doctors to return to training. Finding out after the fact that the arm wasn't yet ready certainly didn't do the UFC any favors, and it took another fight off the UFC 149 card, but there's not a lot that can be done when the injury just isn't yet healed. Hopefully the ill effects of recovery will fade soon enough, and perhaps he'll be back by early fall.

University researchers develop AWARE-2 camera, hope it hits the mainstream in five years

Gigapixel cameras aren't exactly hot-off-the-presses, but a few wizards at Duke and the University of Arizona may be close to getting that sort of technology into your future point-and-shoot. Reportedly, electrical engineers with gobs of free time and an imagination the size of Coach K's ego have managed to synchronize 98 minuscule cameras -- each with a 14-megapixel sensor -- "grouped around a shared spherical lens". The real kicker here is the hope for the future: these same researchers feel that "within five years, as the electronic components of the cameras become miniaturized and more efficient, the next generation of gigapixel cameras should be available to the general public." The prototype itself measures a whopping 2.5-feet square and 20 inches deep, but only around 3 percent of it is made of optical elements; the vast majority is circuitry needed to calculate the stupefying amount of information captured with such a device.
